How is Land Redeemed in The Land of Israel: Purchase of Land in the Years 1882-1914 provides a thorough historical and analytical study of land purchases in Ottoman Land of Israel from 1882 to 1914. Drawing on an unparalleled dataset that documents nearly all Jewish land transactions of the period, the book explores Ottoman land laws, government policies, and the realities of land buying on the ground. Challenging common assumptions, it shows that Ottoman land legislation was relatively progressive and that the main barriers to land acquisition were not legal restrictions or local resistance, but limited financial resources and hesitancy to invest. This carefully researched work offers a solid, evidence-based foundation for informed discussion of the region’s complex history.

I approached this research with an open and impartial perspective, reviewing nearly all historical works written in Hebrew and English on the period.

About the Book
This book offers a fresh examination of Jewish land acquisition during the First and Second Aliyah, combining legal analysis with empirical research. Drawing on newspapers, archival documents, and scholarly studies, it reconstructs the Ottoman land law framework and traces transactions from small urban plots to expansive rural estates. By presenting verified data alongside careful legal analysis, the study challenges prevailing ideological narratives and provides a balanced basis for discussing questions of legality, ownership, and displacement.
