This catalog documents Intersecting Ecologies, a two person show of Paula Gerstenblatt and Jan Piribeck at the Parsonage Gallery in Searsport Maine (USA).

The exhibit explores the intersection of the personal, social, and environmental ecologies in three island locations--Long and Sears Island Maine and South Greenland--where Gerstenblatt and Piribeck worked as artists, researchers, and community practitioners. The Intersection Ecologies catalog includes a joint statement by the artists, forward by curator Aaron Rosen, and a sampling of the work in the exhibition.

Jan Piribeck is an artist and Emerita Professor of Art at the University of Southern Maine. Her research and creative work include exploring how art can communicate the climate crisis and be a catalyst for social change. Her studio practice combines painting, and drawing with digital media, and her community work includes organizing walks to sites of ecological significance. As part of the Intersecting Ecologies project she organized walks on Long Island and Sears Island, Maine (USA) and in the Kujataa region of South Greenland. She has presented in national and international forums on the topic of art and environment, and her work has been shown in numerous exhibits including ANTHROPOCENIC: Art About the Natural World in the Human Era, Bates College Museum of Art, Lewiston, Maine; MELTDOWN, Center for Maine Contemporary Art, Rockland, Maine and Walking the Line, Pedvale Art Park, Courland, Latvia.

Dr. Paula Gerstenblatt is an artist and Professor of Social Work at the University of Southern Maine. Her current research and creative work addresses the impacts of environmental, cultural, and social change in coastal communities in Maine and Greenland through qualitative and arts-based methods. Her research and application of collage portraiture explores the intersection of collective and personal complex narratives told from multiple perspectives, particularly the voices of those overlooked. Her studio practice combines painting, drawing, and collage using maps, photographs, archival documents, text, and material such as oil bars and pastels to create layered stories. As part of the Intersecting Ecologies project she organized collage workshops for communities on Long Island and Sears Island, Maine (USA) and in the Kujataa region of South Greenland. She is a National Endowment for the Arts grant recipient and her work has been exhibited in the United States and abroad, and most recently at the Jewish Museum of Maine, the Maine Center for Holocaust and Human Rights, and the Parsonage Gallery in projects supported in part by a USM Trustee Professorship award.
