When I went to the opening reception for your exhibit, I was absolutely blown away. The photographs are amazing. You are truly gifted, and have the uncanny ability to disappear when you take a photo so your subject is at ease. David and I returned another time to spend more leisurely time with the photographs and to listen to some of the interviews. Well done! The interviews and their accessibility are a great feature.
Itay, the book is absolutely beautiful, laid out and captioned very well. What a precious treasure this is for the Maine Jewish community. … This needs to be seen, seen, seen.

Faces and Facets of Jewish Life in Maine

About the Book

Faces and Facets of Jewish Life in Maine is a documentary art book that grew out of a major commissioned project by the Maine Jewish Museum. Over six weeks of photography across the state, Israeli photographer Hedva Rokach traveled more than 7,000 miles, capturing portraits of nearly 300 individuals in the places where their lives unfold—homes, workplaces, landscapes, and community spaces.
The book combines visual storytelling with bilingual text (English and Hebrew), offering cultural context and personal narratives that reflect the rich, multifaceted nature of Jewish life in Maine. Featuring Jews by birth and by choice, interfaith families, and residents of both seasonal and permanent communities, the collection expands traditional understandings of Jewish identity in contemporary America.
More than a portrait of a single community, this book engages broader conversations about diversity, belonging, and cultural identity within the American Jewish experience.

Your eye for capturing their surroundings resulted in very atmospheric photos that really spoke to me! The houses, the landscapes, the interiors and all the details that drew your attention – just wonderful.
— Sandrine Chabert

This book is absolutely stunning! Hedva Rokach I have no words for how lovely each picture is. I am so honored to be a part of this project. Thank you!

I just returned from delivering the faces and faces to Mrs. D. over in Gardner. We sat at our kitchen table, looking through the book and she still didn’t realize that the book was for her. About halfway through I repeated again that the book is hers to keep for free and he just wouldn’t believe it was so special her face lit up just incredibly. She jumped up. She came over and gave me this big hug. She said this is such a blessing I am getting all these blessings. So I guess if you talk to Hedva again do convey how happy she made Mrs. D.

We are really enjoying the beautiful book and enjoying even more in the sharing of it with our Jewish friends who were not present the day you photographed at Temple Beth El in Augusta. It’s a treasure. Looking forward to First night Seder and more sharing.
