We all seek peace and harmony,
precisely because they are missing from our lives.
We all long to be happy and free,
believing, deep down, that this is our birthright.

Pain’s Journey

About the Book

Pain’s Journey documents a life cut short and a family’s effort to understand, remember, and find meaning. Gilad Osher, 24, an outstanding Israeli Navy graduate and alumnus of the Mevo’ot Yam Maritime School, set out on a post-military journey to the Far East. He traveled extensively in India, recording his experiences through journals and photographs that he sent home to his family.
Unexpectedly, Gilad changed his plans and traveled to Japan, where he intended to work in order to fund the continuation of his journey. In Japan, he was murdered under circumstances that remain unresolved. His journals and photographs from India became the family’s last tangible connection to him.
In October 2000, his sister Galia, their father, and another family member traveled through India, retracing Gilad’s documented route. The book weaves together Gilad’s original travel diary with Galia’s reflective journal from this later journey, creating a layered narrative of travel, loss, connection, and healing.
The book stands as both an emotional and documentary primary source, presenting authentic materials and lived experience rather than fictionalized storytelling.
