Medical Heritage: Research, History, & Knowledge Dissemination

Overview
Itay Bahur Publishing focuses on medical history, with a particular emphasis on the history of medicine in the Land of Israel. The publishing house serves as the official publisher of the Israeli Society for the History of Medicine and Science, and for more than two decades has functioned as a central platform for scholarly publication in this field in Israel, as well as making this work accessible to a wider public audience.

Over the years, dozens of research books, institutional publications, and conference volumes have been published, combining historical research, academic and editorial work, and the dissemination of knowledge to both professional and general audiences. The publishing house works in cooperation with the Israel Medical Association, the Ministry of Health, hospitals, health funds, universities, scientific libraries, and stakeholders in the healthcare and medical sector.

The field of medical heritage in Israel has a unique dimension: alongside the development of medical science, it also reflects the formation of the country’s healthcare system. Even before the establishment of the State of Israel, a broad institutional medical infrastructure developed in the country, including hospitals, health funds, emergency services, and more, which was largely initiated and built by immigrant physicians and laid the foundations for Israel’s modern healthcare system.

Key Projects
Physicians of the Land of Israel 1799–1948
A comprehensive biographical lexicon by Prof. Nissim Levy and Yael Levy, documenting the lives and work of thousands of physicians who practiced in the Land of Israel prior to the establishment of the State of Israel. The project is based on decades of ongoing research and has been published in three editions (2008, 2012, 2017), each significantly expanded. The Israel Medical Association supported all editions, and the second edition was selected as its official centennial publication. Additional institutions, including the German-Speaking Jewry Heritage Museum Tefen, the Hecht Foundation, and the Organization of Central European Immigrants, contributed to the project.

• Hospital and Health Fund Publications
The publishing house has produced heritage books for leading medical institutions in Israel, including Ziv Medical Center, the Scottish Hospital in Nazareth (EMMS), Schneider Children’s Medical Center of Israel, and Meuhedet Health Services, among others. These publications combine rigorous historical research with institutional documentation, strengthening organizational identity, preserving knowledge, and making medical heritage accessible to staff and the broader public.

• Conferences, Study Days, and Conference Proceedings
The publishing house is an active partner in organizing, editing, and publishing professional conferences and study days, including the “Medicine and the Holocaust” conference series at the Galilee Medical Center in Nahariya (ongoing since 2011). It is also responsible for editing, translating, and producing conference volumes, serving as a professional hub for the dissemination of research content to medical and academic audiences.

• Medical Heritage Exhibitions
The publishing house is involved in the documentation and accessibility of historical medical archives and has produced three historical photography exhibitions on the history of medicine in Safed, hosted at Ziv Medical Center, the School of Nursing, and Safed Academic College. These exhibitions aim to make medical history accessible to the general public and to strengthen the connection between medical heritage, healthcare institutions, and the community.
